10 Techniques to Avoid Interview Mistakes

An interview is a good selection tool in the hands of the person who knows how to use it properly.

If it is not used properly or the interviewer himself / herself is not having a positive frame of mind, mistakes may occur. The techniques to avoid interview mistakes are given below:

1. To obtain detail information about the job for which applicants are being interviewed. So asking of right questions and hence getting of relevant responses is required.

2. May favor applicants who share his/ interviewer own attitudes- it should be avoid.

3. To establish rapport with interviewee because he himself does / does not possess good interpersonal skills.

4. Do not resort to snap judgment, making a decision as to the applicant’s suitability in the first few minutes of the interview showed be avoided? A comprehensive judgment is required for selection of a candidate.

5. May have awarded high scores by showing leniency. So interviewer should avoid leniency error.

6. May allow the ratings to be influenced by the interviewer’s likes and dislikes (bias). So should be careful about the biasness towards any candidate.

7. May conclude that a poorly dressed candidate is not intelligent, attractive females are good for public dealings etc. This is known as ‘hallow effect’ where a single important trait of a candidate affects the judgment of the rater. So be careful about the halo effect.

8. Interviewer must avoid any type of pressure to hire candidates.

9. An applicant may look very unimpressive in one particular area, the interview may concentrate on that and may turn that one negative characteristic a conclusion is weak on all fronts. This is known as Horn Effect and the interviewer should avoid it..

10. An interviewer must be careful in discrimination against minorities, women, older workers and persons with disabilities and they can influence attitude toward other group as well. This is known as discrimination and the interviewer should avoid it.

It is the duty of the manager and the authority of the organization to establish the proper rules and regulation and that must be ensure to eradicate of resorting illegal practices in the name of mistakes. The implementation of rules and regulation should be follow strictly into all aspects of organizational activities.
